Everybody deserves to have their own computer man, someone with experience in whom they can trust for advice and help. Hour Computer Man, Mike Magarahan, has been helping small businesses with as little as one computer in and around Charlotte North Carolina daily since 1981.
General Info
The evolution of the personal computer has put the power of a million dollar computer just a few decades ago into the hands of the individual. Microsoft has given us a standard in the Windows platform to use. It allows the innovation and integration of thousands of products as add-ons in software and hardware. But we no longer have a team of individuals called “Our Computer Department” to maintain the computer. The individual user is basically on their own and they get by with a little help from their friends.
As Hour Computer Man, I am a backdoor employee working as an independent contractor for a number of small businesses in and around Charlotte NC. As such I provide purchasing advice, aquisition, installation, and maintenamce on an a-la-carte, time and materials basis by the hour. Specializing in making computers work, especially when they don’t, I am available for phone support, computer to computer sharing your computer screen, and on-site assistance.
Having someone experienced that you can trust is just a phone call away.

None of the above
The answer is 5. None of the above. It’s backup.
Let’s talk BACKUP
According to DataRecovery.com, “On average, commercial hard drives [your computer’s filing cabinet] have a rated lifespan of 3-5 years…others suffer…catastrophic failures after a few months of use…SSDs [the newer faster hard drives] are no exception…One of the most common misconceptions about solid-state drives (SSDs) is that they’re capable of storing data indefinitely. All storage devices eventually fail, and unfortunately, SSDs are no exception. A modern SSD can operate for upwards of 5 years under optimal operating conditions…but generally, SSDs will begin encountering issues after about 5 years of typical use…”
The takeaway: All storage devices have drawbacks, and you should never consider your data “safe” if it exists on a single physical device. Make regular backups of all important files, regardless of whether you’re using an SSD or a traditional hard drive as your primary means of storage.
The simplest backup is a copy of your most important files made to a USB flash drive, another internal drive, an external USB hard drive, or to another computer on your network. It is simple to do but all too often users have never been taught or do not take the time to keep it up to date. I invite you to call me and let me help you do that.
Alternatively, consider my favorite automatic backup, Carbonite. I can help you get it and I can help you make sure it is backing up all that you need to preserve. Again, backup is the most important thing you can do with your computer. Call me today and I will help you to insure that it is done right. 704-564-1038
