We still need an up to date active antivirus (click here to learn about the Best Free One) to browse the Internet but malware is more of a threat to us than antivirus ever was. Malware is the all inclusive term (meaning Bad Software) that includes, as a subset, all the computer viruses that exist, but it also includes the thousands to millions (depending on which experts you ask) of malicious programs that are not viruses but still do harm to your computer.
Even the Best Antivirus is not going to be able to keep malware off your computer because they are not necessarily viruses. They are hostile or intrusive software intended to steal your information (usually financial information), spy on your computer activity, display unsolicited advertisements, or worse extort money from you.
